What You Need To Know About 5G

You have been hearing next big thing in wireless communications, and we are here to pin down the most common questions you have in mind.

What is 5G?
Simply put,' 5G', or 5th Generation, 5G is the fifth generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks that began wide deployment in 2019. We've come to expect mobile access to large amounts of data across the developed and developing worlds. Higher transmission speed and accuracy means it opens up possibilities of future technologies like driverless cars, virtual reality, augmented reality, and blueray video streaming, and more!

How Fast is 5G?
Potentially 20 times faster then LTE, it supports data transfer rates of up to 20Gbit/s download and 10Gbit/s upload. This is on the premise of ideal conditions with basically no barriers between the phone and the network. It's really hard to how fast 5G would really be once it's fully deployed here in the Philippines. But compared to ther networks, here's how long you can download a 3 GB movie:

  • 3G - 1 hour, 8 minutes
  • 4G LTE - 27 minutes
  • 5G - 35 seconds

In Japan, there are even recorded tests that shows 5G can reach 20 Gbit/s, which means that you 3 GB movie will be saved in just a blink of an eye.

Globe Telecoms
As of November 2019, Globe is already offering 5G postpaid plans for homes. Priced P1899 for 20Mbps, P2499 for 50Mbps, and P2899 for 100Mbps.

Smart Communications
On the other hand, Smart & PLDT has rolled out a free and open, fiber powered Wi-Fi community in key areas including Gateway Mall, Smart Araneta Coliseum, New Frontier Theater and Araneta City Bus Port. They partnered with Araneta Group to launch the country's first 5G enabled shopping mall.
